La muerte por inhalación de monóxido de carbono se relaciona con mal uso de braseros, artefactos a gas mal instalados o con funcionamiento deficiente.
Ante las bajas temperaturas de la época invernal, el Ministerio de Salud Pública advierte a la población sobre los riesgos de intoxicación por inhalación de monóxido de carbono, gas imperceptible pero muy peligroso, ya que puede provocar enfermedad y la pérdida de la vida.
Las muertes por intoxicación con monóxido de carbono son prevenibles y evitables. Gran parte de los casos ocurren por mal uso de braseros o funcionamiento deficiente de artefactos a gas en ambientes mal ventilados.
El monóxido de carbono se origina en artefactos que queman gas, carbón, leña, querosén, alcohol o cualquier otro combustible. Es un gas que no tiene olor ni color, se encuentra en el humo de la combustión que producen braseros, estufas a gas y otros sistemas de calefacción, velas, vehículos con motor encendido, etc. Por eso es importante no mantener los ambientes completamente cerrados, para evitar la acumulación de monóxido de carbono.
La cartera sanitaria provincial recomienda hacer limpiar y revisar los artefactos de calefacción por gasistas matriculados antes de ponerlos en funcionamiento y no utilizar hornallas u hornos de cocina para calentar los ambientes.
En los casos en que se utilice brasero, éste debe ser encendido fuera de la casa y entrarlo sólo cuando el carbón está completamente prendido, manteniendo una ventana abierta para permitir la circulación de aire. No dejarlo en el interior, sobre todo cuando se va a dormir.
Nunca se debe dormir con velas o braseros encendidos, ya que al riesgo de intoxicación por monóxido de carbono se suma la posibilidad de incendio. Tampoco se debe instalar el calefón en el interior del baño. La salida al exterior de calefones y calefactores debe ser controlada periódicamente por gasistas matriculados.
La llama de hornallas debe ser siempre azul, si tiene color amarillo o anaranjado es por la presencia de monóxido de carbono y en ese caso se debe revisar los artefactos. Se recomienda también revisar chimeneas, ya que algunas aves pueden construir su nido en ellas y obstruir la salida de los gases.
Otro cuidado que se debe tener es no encender el motor de vehículos en lugares cerrados, ya que el humo del caño de escape produce alta concentración de monóxido de carbono.
La intoxicación por monóxido de carbono provoca dolor de cabeza, mareos, debilidad, náuseas, vómitos, dolor en el pecho, confusión y pérdida del conocimiento. Las personas dormidas pueden morir sin poder reaccionar.
Ante la sospecha de intoxicación se debe retirar de inmediato a la persona del ambiente contaminado, ventilar el lugar, llevarla al centro de salud más próximo o solicitar ayuda al Sistema de Emergencias 911.
